The mission of the Rotary Club is to encourage and foster the ideal of service. Toward that end, the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary raises funds to help people of any age who plan to pursue postsecondary education. We raise funds for scholarships at our events (like Trivia Night, our annual Dinner Raffle, the Disc Golf Tournament, etc.), and through donor contributions. Thus available funds will vary from year to year but the chosen winners will typically receive between $250-$1000. Scholarships are generally reserved for residents of Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, Putney, Vernon, Newfane, Brookline, Jamaica, Townshend, and Windham in VT as well as (West) Chesterfield and Hinsdale in NH.
The Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary raises and sets aside funds to help people of any age who plan to pursue any type of post-secondary education and are committed to "Service Above Self".
John Penfield Scholarships
The Penfield application is available with a deadline of May 13, 2026. (See "Links" on the sidebar for link to the application.)
John Penfield was a Charter Member and was the founding President of the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club. This scholarship was created to honor his spirit of giving in the community, his dedication to service, and his expertise in the automotive field. John embodied the object of Rotary--to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and to encourage and foster:
1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
