President Mona started her the meeting with a Rotary Minute…......

ROTARY MINUTE:
A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made (1905) by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization, Movement and Service work in action." Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. In 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 teeth and six spokes was adopted by the "Rotary International Association.
A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a "keyway" in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.

GUEST SPEAKERS:  No Guest speakers today, so Tristam updated us on The Moving Wall, Coffee from Honduras, and Pine Ridge.

The Moving Wall- they have enlisted the help of contractor extraordinaire Ken Harris from West Dummerston Builders to build the platform needed for the wall. For those that don’t know Ken he is not only an amazing contractor but he also served in the Army many years ago.  Moreover they are working on a list of volunteers/skills that will be needed. When it is finished Tristam will let us know so we can sign up to help.

Coffee from Honduras- it appears the coffee from Honduras will not be happening this year as they are having problems with harvesting and transporting the beans. He will keep us updated.

Pine Ridge Reservation- located in South Dakota, is home to the Oglala Sioux Tribe and is 2,000,000 acres large with an estimated population of close to 40,000. The reservation is large, and its needs immense, commensurate with grinding poverty. Unemployment is more than 80 percent, the weather is extreme, and families struggle mightily with crushing financial, housing, health, educational and social issues.

With the help of Marty Cohn, Rotary has expanded their involvement with a 13 year commitment through a number of projects on the reservation. The newest venture being a Dental Clinic. There were dentists connected to the reservation in the past and they are now going to ramp up the project and have the visits be more frequent and organized. With the help of Tiny, there will be a connection of leadership from the reservation telling outsiders what is needed. Her involvement will hopefully create a sustainable commitment and impact to the community and population in need.
